Examination is the initial consideration when creating an Organic Enterprise. An organization must be prepared to assess its current situation and willing to transform and recreate itself into a new kind of living entity.
Typically, this step involves an evaluation or assessment of where the organization is in relation to where it wants to be. This examination into what is currently being done and whether or not that aligns with an organization’s core values is the beginning of organizational awareness that is a pre-requisite for any sentient organization.
Martin Melaver has described this examination step as a restoration which “connotes something spiritual, as an action that is restorative in nature, returning one to some healthy and/or exalted state.”
He goes on to say how our organizations must consider that ”…how one earns a living flows seamlessly into a set of ethical beliefs and practices promoting the overall health and well-being of our land and community… the sense that how one conducts oneself is as important as what one does and how well one does it; the commitment to ongoing and lifelong learning; the belief in giving back to the community on a regular basis and not just at the end of a long successful career; the belief that work entails personal and spiritual growth….”
