The first and primary tenet of The Organic Enterprise is Purpose. It is the ultimate teleological principle, the DNA, the soul of any truly successful enterprise.
Teleology is the belief that purpose and design are apparent in nature; that phenomena are guided not only by mechanical or evolutionary forces, but that they also are moving toward certain goals of self-realization and an ultimate cause exists.
Without a purpose, a mission, or an identity, an organization is not viable. Just as everyone wrestles at some point with finding meaning in their life, an organization must ask some hard questions: Where do we add value? How do we make a difference? Why are we here? Without a clear answer to these questions, an organization is unsustainable in the long-term.
The greatest potential motivating factor for any member of an organization is their belief that by contributing to that organization, they can make a difference in not only their life, but the lives of others. Yet, very few leaders take the time to consider how this important factor can affect the future of not only their organization, but indeed the rest of the world.
The Organic Enterprise seeks to tap into the 2 or 3 times that you were part of a high-performing team that was perfectly aligned to truly do something great. Perhaps it was an athletic team, political campaign, or a charitable act. The shared sense of purpose and unity that unleashed a powerful wave of energy whose momentum quickly submerged petty bickering, personal tensions, and fear of failure. Everyone was pulling together toward the same goal with a clear, singleness of purpose.
